Aid for Tails: Romanian Shelters Receive 6 Tons of Pet Food from Kormotech
The U-Hearts Foundation, created by the international pet food manufacturer of Kormotech Group of Companies, has distributed 6 tons of Optimeal cat and dog food valued at approximately 22,000 euros to Romanian shelters.
11 shelters received the aid across eight regions: Arad, Cluj Napoca, Desa (Dolj), Campina (Prahova), Buzău, Bucharest, Iasi, and Baia Mare. This food supply will suffice to feed up to 2,000 animals a month.
"Thanks to the U-Hearts Foundation, we received nearly 1,500 kg of high-quality food," said the Asociația pentru Protecția Animalelor Măriuța shelter in Desa (Dolj region), which supports over 1,000 animals. "It's a significant aid for the puppies and kittens we care for daily."
The U-Hearts Foundation is a charitable organization founded in 2022 by the Kormotech Group of Companies. Its goal is to improve the living conditions of abandoned animals in Eastern Europe. The foundation provides food, assists in finding homes for them, and more. Since the full-scale invasion began, the foundation has actively supported the Save Pets of Ukraine initiative, providing Ukrainian shelters with over 2,000 tons of food. The work of U-Hearts continues Kormotech's mission. "We believe that love for animals makes the world a better place," says Kormotech. "Our social mission is to change how pets are viewed across Eastern Europe: from property to companions and family members."
The issue of stray animals in Romania is particularly severe. In Argeș County alone, there are approximately 85,000 stray dogs. Compared to the situation across the continent, Romania has the largest population of stray animals, estimated at up to 500,000 dogs and possibly even more cats. In 2013, the government enacted a law that allows for the capture and euthanasia of stray dogs if they are not claimed within two weeks.
The majority of shelters in Romania, both state and private, primarily house dogs. Private shelters often operate thanks to the dedication of volunteers and critically needed donations. "Shelters typically struggle to afford a sufficient quantity of quality products for the animals," says Ilona Luchynina, Project Manager of the U-Hearts Foundation. "Thus, our initiative showed genuine joy in the Romanian shelters. The animals were delighted, too!"
The Kormotech Group of Companies has been operating in the Romanian market since 2020. This country accounts for about 20% of cat and dog food exports. Kormotech brands include Optimeal, a super-premium food for cats and dogs; Delickcious, a premium plus food for cats and dogs; Club 4 Paws, a premium food; and My Love, a standard—class food.
