«I’m grateful that I wasn’t pushed into the operational side of the business back then»
Rostyslav Vovk, CEO and co-owner of Kormotech, was among the speakers in a discussion on succession in family businesses during the SUP Family Picnic — an event for members of the Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs that combined leisure with informal networking.
«When it comes to succession, handing over control is psychologically difficult, but teaching responsibility is even harder. Control is a process — you can transfer or delegate it. Responsibility, however, is a personal choice. You can’t impose it. Children must go through their own decisions and mistakes. Our role is to create an environment where they learn to take ownership of the consequences», — explained Rostyslav Vovk, CEO and co-owner of Kormotech.
According to him, «succession» does not necessarily mean pushing the next generation into the company’s day-to-day operations. Rather, it refers to the transfer of company shares. «From my own experience, I’m very grateful that I wasn't forced into the operational side of the family business, — he added. — That’s precisely how Kormotech was born».
«Children should never be obliged to work in the family business. But every day, by my own example, I show them that it’s worth it. And I fully accept the possibility that their passion may lead them to a different kind of entrepreneurship — not necessarily the one we are pursuing now. In any case, they will always have my support».
As Rostyslav explained, today the company culture and spirit of Kormotech still largely stem from his personality — and the same goes for the brand. «But we are now working so that the system can stand on its own, rooted in core values embraced by the company’s nucleus — even when I am no longer involved in operational management». — he added.
